Seattle's 1-800-RID-OF-IT Supports Shalom Bayit

Shalom Bayit is a furniture bank for survivors of domestic violence and their children, run by the Seattle Section of National Council of Jewish Women.

Their mission is to provide gently used or new donated furniture and household items to survivors of domestic violence and their children residing in King County.

Since its establishment in 2001, Shalom Bayit has helped create new homes for over 600 women and their children with more than 12,000 donated items from over 900 donors throughout King County. Ninety-five percent of Shalom Bayit’s clients are not Jewish, and come from a wide variety of ethnic, racial, religious and economic backgrounds. Donations of gently used furniture and household items are picked up monthly from donors.

1-800 Rid-Of-It Junk Removal helps by providing our trucks and staff to assist with their monthly pick ups. We also happily help out with the annual warehouse clear out.

In the midst of the economic crisis, it is such a wonderful gift to have continued support and encouragement for the NCJW-Seattle Shalom Bayit Program. Our most recent partnership with the folks at 1800 Rid Of It, a junk removal company, has proven to be a tremendous success for our program, donors and clients.

Our partnership began in April, when the company donated their services to assist in clearing the warehouse. They were able to remove broken furniture, unusable office electronics, and older furniture pieces, as well as assisting us in cleaning and organizing our warehouse space to create the most efficient layout for housing the most donations. While their assistance in cleaning the warehouse was very much appreciated, and well needed, the main intention of their partnership was to work with us on furniture pickup and delivery days, allowing us to pickup an increased amount of donations, as well as drop off furniture to our clients and their families on a faster time schedule.

This past June, we were able to coordinate our first donation pickup with their company, doubling in a single day our furniture pickups for the month. Their services were provided completely free of charge to our program, and with their help we were able to stock the warehouse to provide almost every single item clients requested during the following week of appointments.

In addition to furniture pickup days, client delivery days, and warehouse cleaning, we are also discussing the possibilities of co-planning a Seattle area furniture drive with their company in the fall. Most recently, 1800 Rid of It partnered with Vancouver’s Homestart Organization, providing over 10 families with gently used furniture from a city wide furniture drive. Please be on the lookout for more information on Shalom Bayit and 1800 Rid of It’s fall furniture drive.

Here at NCJW’s Shalom Bayit program, we would like to extend our deepest thanks and gratitude to the 1800 Rid of It Team. If you have any junk removal services you need in the Seattle, Toronto or Vancouver area, we strongly suggest you use this fantastic company devoted to community service and giving back.
