On on ongoing, monthly basis, Vancouver's 1-800-RID-OF-IT Junk Removal Comany continues to support local families through our work with the Homestart Foundation.
July 2009
‘T’ is a young single mother who has just moved out of her family's home with her infant son to her own home. She is on welfare and moved in with nothing except a desk and desk chair. Thanks to our customers and HomeStart donors ‘T’ and her son now has a sofa, easy chair, bookshelf, coffee table, chest of drawers, two night tables, TV and TV stand, kitchen table, 4 chairs and 3 lamps in their new home. She is thrilled with her new furniture.
June 2009
Thanks to the generosity of our customer and the people of Vancouver, we were able to furnish the homes of following families during our June 2009 Housewarming event.
“A” is a mother of a 5 year old child and came out of a long term abusive relationship. She was living in short term transitional housing, which also helped equip her with some skills for recovery. She then moved in with some family for some time. She and her daughter have just found their own apartment and had no means to furnish their new home. She is doing her best to recover from her past abuse.
“R” was previously homeless and then got housing in a Downtown East Side converted hotel. But once she had her baby, she had to leave the adult only building (which was furnished) and she wanted a better environment for her child. She was able to find an apartment but absolutely unable to afford any furnishings. She & her newborn were living in an empty space with little more than a crib.
“D” moved into a subsidized housing unit with her children in April. She and her children had fled to a safe house in October, and had later moved to a furnished transitional home while they looked for permanent, affordable accommodation. Having left behind an abusive relationship and much of what she owned, she lacked the basics for rebuilding a household. As a part-time care worker, she simply did not have the money to buy furniture, even used furniture, while at the same time paying the rent and supporting three kids.
